Disaster
Team

History of how the ADT began

The Animals' Disaster Team was formed in 1992, in Cleveland, Ohio as the result of a situation involving the demolition of a home on the west side of the city.  It became apparent at that time, that the "humane community" had no organized plan in the event of a disaster, (natural or man-made), in the Cleveland/Cuyahoga County area.

After some research, it was discovered that the existing Emergency Management organizations, as the designated responders, had absolutely no plan in effect to rescue and house animals, both domestic and wildlife, if there was a critical incident in our county.  Another issue that needed to be addressed was the variety of animals that could be affected.  Our community has domestic animals, wildlife, farm animals, zoo animals, and  several animal shelters.  There is also a variety of exotic animals, privately owned.

Representatives from all areas of animal care were contacted to discuss this issue in a special meeting, and it was decided that a plan of action would be formed.  Extensive research began immediately and a formal training program was established.

Credit must be given to the Cuyahoga County Emergency Management Assistance Center, and the American Red Cross, Greater Cleveland Chapter for the guidance and information they provided.  As the chief responders, they have been extremely helpful in our training program.

Since that initial meeting, we have identified available resources, including rescue volunteers/animal handlers, medical staff, housing, emergency equipment, and communication ability in preparation for a disaster.

New ADT Chapters will be established as representatives of communities outside Cuyahoga County come forward and commit to our program.  Our goal at this time is to have an ADT for every county in Ohio.
