Summary of the Goal

"The goal was to have offspring that had the skills and understanding to raise their own young and yet still be easily handled by their human caretaker."

The behavioral development of the young has been an interesting learning experience for this author. Even with the handling and social interaction they had it was noted that the young upon emerging from the nest still needed to learn the basics of integrating into the "flock". There have been phases of biting and fear reactions that were not expected. Each chick had to be taught the basic up and down commands, even though these commands had been practiced while the young were being handled earlier in their development.

The other members of the flock became examples of behavior for the young. The father in particular, was used in training sessions to show that it was ok to step up on the hand or step down on the knee when asked to. After watching the other bird perform the requested action, the young were much more accepting of doing it themselves.

This author now understands a little better that it can take a fledgling some time to learn their place in the flock, and they can learn their behavior best from those around them.
