RELINQUISHMENT

One of the ways a Border Collie can end up in rescue is when the predominant type is inadvertently reinforced to beyond the extreme. A bold who never has limitations placed on them. A wary who is yelled at and ignored. A shy who is isolated and over-protected. An upbeat who is never taught boundaries. People get tired of the problem dogs they've created and normally can't find the kind of help that will mend their relationships. This category of relinquishers are people with good intentions but not enough dog skills.

Another, and much sadder, way a Border Collie can end up in rescue is when the dog is forced to live in the shadow of the dog's predominant type. A bold who is beaten and kicked into the shy. A wary who is talked to in a high, false voice accompanied by large, fake body movements and never allowed a moment of quiet. An upbeat who is neglected and abused. A shy who is forced to show a macho attitude towards the world. This category of relinquishers should never live with dogs.

ADOPTION

Soul-to-soul connections. A bold dog does best with a bold type person. The same with wary, shy, and upbeat. But the dogs can also do very well with a person who has the main support temperament of the dog. So a Bold/Wary would also do well with a wary type person. Shadow adoptions are a disaster. A bold dog should not be placed with a shy type person. A wary should not be placed with an extreme upbeat person. A shy dog should not be placed with a bold type person. An upbeat dog should not be placed with an extreme wary person.
